What Are Prestige Points In LoL & How To Get Them
Although Blue Essence (BE), Riot Points (RP), and gemstones are the more popular currencies in League of Legends – there are a few other currencies worth talking about.
One of these currencies, and the one you’ll need to unlock a good chunk of all prestige skins LoL offers, are the aptly named Prestige Points.
What Are Prestige Points Used For In LoL?
While prestige skins are certainly the more popular way to trade in your prestige points – there are a few other rewards you can get in-game.
Here are some of the rewards you can unlock with Prestige Points:
- Prestige character & ward skins.
- Special summoner profile icons.
- Limited-edition emotes for in-game use.
- Rare crafting materials, gemstones, and other reagents.
This in-game currency isn’t tied to any sort of events like League of Legends Party Rewards or the Lunar Festival. Instead, you can rack them up and cash out anytime.
How To Get Prestige Points In League Of Legends
Just like with every other in-game currency, you can only earn Prestige Points by playing the game, at least for the most part.
Here are 3 ways to earn Prestige Points in LoL:
- Unlock masterwork chests – you’ll be spending 2500 Riot Points in exchange for a summary total of 13 Prestige Points as well as 11 Masterwork chest and key combos.
- Exchange event tokens for the Prestige Point bundle – you can trade in 1100 event tokens for 100 points.
- Complete event milestones – each milestone awards 25 points for a total of 125. You’ll also typically see 4 or more events per year, meaning you should be able to pick up enough points for 5 skins if you complete every milestone during every event.
Prestige Skin & System F.A.Q.
Inevitably, some players have burning questions about the system and lineup of skins offered. Below, we’ll provide answers to some of these questions.
Can You Get Prestige Skins From Chests?
Unfortunately, at the moment, there’s no way to get skins from chests directly. However, you can open Masterwork chests to get prestige points as well as buy chest bundles that feature points as a bonus.
What Prestige Skins Are Coming Out In 2021?
This year, there 3 champions that are getting new prestige skins. These are Fiora, Lulu, and Leona. The fourth champion to get skin is still up in the air but it might be Graves, Ashe, Syndra, Nidalee, Or Diana.
More details should be available on this by patch 10.25.
Will 2019 Prestige Skins Come Back This Year?
Unfortunately, non all prestige skins LoL has put out over the years are here to stay. The event-specific and yearly skins are limited to that time-frame. If you’ve missed out – you’re out of luck, aside from super rare Hextech crafting drops where you’ll cop a skin.
Oppinion: Is The Prestige System Good?
Unsurprisingly, the whole prestige system is a little bit of a controversial topic in the LoL player community.
At the end of each year – Riot resets the number of prestige points that you’ve got saved up.
In theory, this is a good thing, since it makes the new year’s skins harder to get, and thus far more valuable. However, if you’re late to the party and decide to pick up a battle pass halfway through the year – you may be out of luck as you won’t make it far enough to cop the skin you want before all your points are wiped into oblivion.
This doesn’t particularly feel rewarding on its own. And when you consider the fact that a lot of the milestones are just super grindy rather than being mastery-based, it kind of takes away from the time you’re putting into a champion as you’re rewarded more for mindlessly grinding it out than actually taking the time to get up close and personal with the champion you’ve chosen.
Closing Thoughts
In a game as diverse as League of Legends, players have plenty of options when it comes to customizing their champions and kitting them out with aesthetic upgrades.
Among these cosmetic skins – few are as rare as the Prestige Skin lineup!
